AI Startup Writer Raises $100 Million To Take On ChatGPT Enterprise

Hey Everyone,

I could write about 🌱 startups all day, especially as they intersect with Generative A.I.’s generous funding spree. I’m not sure how long this will last, but it’s very entertain to watch. There appears to be a significant FOMO when it comes to both generative and companionship elements of Generative A.I. and Interactive A.I. (IAI) these days in enterprise tools and products.

Writer is not one of the tools that first comes to mind. In a sea of competing generative tools related to writing, one really has to wonder.

Who are the Investors?

The round is being led by ICONIQ Growth with participation from WndrCo, Balderton Capital and Insight Partners, who led the Series A, and Aspect Ventures, who led the Seed. In addition, this round includes participation from several Writer customers such as Accenture and Vanguard. With this financing, ICONIQ Growth’s Doug Pepper has joined the board.

Transform work with enterprise AI

Startups like Writer are trying to do more than just the usual generative stuff with writing specifically. Competition is fierce with the likes of Jasper, Grammarly and others who are even better funded.

The company even claims to be making headway in multi-model LLMS? The Series B funding will be used to further invest in the company’s own industry-specific large language models (LLMs), and to add agent and multimodal capabilities to its LLMs.

There’s also startup competitors with names like Copy.AI, Narrato and dozens more.

Writer makes many claims in its PR, like when it says it’s the “only generative AI platform built from the ground-up for the enterprise.” It empowers the entire organization including support, operations, product, sales, HR, marketing, and more, to accelerate growth, increase productivity, and ensure governance.

Only in 2023, could such a startup get $100 million for a Series B.

A Full-Stack Generative A.I. Platform for Business

The company describes itself as a “full-stack” generative AI platform for businesses. That’s colorful. One of Writer’s key differentiators is their ability to connect their models to a company’s knowledge base, providing additional context for generated text.

In 2023 Writer also faces competition from new kinds of foundational model companies like

  • OpenAI

  • Anthropic

  • Mistral AI

  • Cohere

  • Typeface

  • AI21 Labs

Realistically it needs to stand out. It tries to do this by training its models on non-copyrighted business writing and offering smaller, more cost-effective models.

Led by Chief Executive Officer May Habib, Writer is the latest artificial intelligence upstart to use large language models in a corporate setting. Here was her post on LinkedIn about the Series B.
